Ask the Pastor 20

Why can’t evil be stopped?

This is one of the questions used to defend the atheist position that there is no God. The argument goes like this:

If God is good – He would destroy evil

If God is powerful – He could destroy evil

Evil is not destroyed

Therefore, there is no God

There are two problems with this rational. First, if there was no evil there could not be free will, because to have a will man must be able to choose between good and evil. It there is no evil then there is no choice and love for God and for others is proven by the choices that we make. Second, making the argument against God because of evil makes the arrogant assumption that God will never do anything about evil. This is not true, evil is not yet destroyed which means that one day it will be destroyed and we, who have believed, will enter into a place of righteousness and love. So, if a person wants to do something about evil, the first thing is to place your faith in the one who is always good and righteous and who has made an atonement for evil, our Lord Jesus Christ. Then by the power of the Holy Spirit live according to the instructions of the Scriptures.
