What is Transcendental Meditation?
Transcendental Meditation was brought to the U.S. by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the early 60’s when there was a movement away from spiritual values to self determination or secular humanism. Therefore TM was taught and marketed as science rather than religion. In 1974 Maharishi founded the Maharishi University of Management (MUM) in Fairfield IA. TM is a technique of meditating where the subject chants an assigned mantra silently. They are able to empty themselves so that they can arrive at their inner self, which in turn will promote physical healing and promote the solving of social problems. It is intended that the practice of TM will one day make a world that is free from problems, in full enlightenment and bliss. However, TM is in fact a religion, more specifically the Hindu religion. The mantra is formed with letters from the Sanskrit and assigned by a special teacher. It includes the worship of one of the many Hindu gods and is pantheistic where all is one with nature. The goal of TM to solve all problems has yet to be achieved and the idea of taking 20 minutes twice a day to relax, will produce better health if you recite a mantra or sit and read the Bible. Maharishi admitted that TM will put one into contact with spirit beings, which would be demons. Far better results are to be found in being filled with the Holy Spirit through faith in Christ, prayer and meditating on the Word of God.
